Hampers spreading the symbol of God's love this Christmas

by Donna Birrell

Churches across the country are sharing the spirit of Advent and making a difference in their communities this season through the gift of giving.

One church in Devon is distributing 1000 Christmas hampers to those in need this year.

Rediscover church in Exeter Street, has, for the last six years, put together Christmas hampers packed full of food to give out to individuals, families and couples across Exeter. The recipients have often included those who are struggling with finances at the moment, particularly during the festive time when there can be many strains on bank accounts, causing much stress, anxiety and worry. The Church says that with the reduction of Universal Credit and the ongoing effects of Covid-19, there is an even greater need for such acts of kindness.

This project involves the church reaching out to primary and secondary schools, charities, GPs Surgeries, and organisations such as YMCA Exeter (young people), Julian House (working with the homeless), Young Carers (across Devon), Home Start (supporting families), Devon Refugee Network (including Afghan Refugees), ECFC Trust (diverse communities), Food Hub (those on low income) to help and support people to get through the Christmas period, where otherwise they might be struggling.

The hampers are packed with a range of food including pasta, rice, sauces, biscuits, tea, coffee, mince pies, beans, soup and more to support a range of people through the festive period.

The Church says it receives calls daily requesting help and support and that this is a practical way to make a difference and show kindness and hope.

"These hampers are much more than just meeting one’s necessities, they’re symbols of love that let people know that they’re valued and cherished. The church calls the local community to come together and spread Christmas joy across the city!”

One hamper recipient said :

“I’d like to say a thank you for the generous food hamper for my family… we have had a tough few years and this made us realise there are lovely, caring people in this world, and you have made our Christmas merrier!”

Rediscover Church is part of Elim Pentecostal which has over 550 churches across the country as well as overseas.
