Church of England rectories in Guernsey will no longer be funded by parish ratepayers from 1st January 2030.
Traditionally, the housing costs for parish rectors were covered by income from parish-owned land. But in recent years, local households have contributed through parish rates to meet increasing expenses.
The change follows a dispute between two parishes over the upkeep of a shared rectory, as reported by the BBC.
Deputy Jonathan Le Tocq, from the Policy and Resources Committee, said the shift “won’t be a surprise to the church", noting that parishes may now pursue individual arrangements.
“There is no reason why the consultation can't take place now", he added. “It will be contractualised and negotiated.”
Local churches and parish rectors are expected to work together to determine suitable alternatives in the years leading up to the change.
