Giant church nativity tries to shift focus away from Santa's grotto

Organisers hope 1,000 children on school trips will pass through the doors of St James in Muswell Hill for the Christmas Experience this week.

Curate, Michael John, told Premier: "You go to a Santa's Grotto and no money has been spared to make everything look absolutely perfect; there's music and there are lights, and it engages your emotions.

"But we talking about something that is real, and so to actually put time, energy, effort, money, prayers, resources into a real story which we are trying to show is real is not a bad thing in any regard."

Rows of chairs have been replaced with sheep, goats, chickens, geese and a donkey from the stable, while the church's chapel has been transformed into King Herod's throne room.

Explaining where his inspiration for the project came from, children's minister at St James, Ashley Nichols, told Premier: "The idea, I guess, came from visiting with my own children a theme park and seeing what they did for Christmas, and thinking wouldn't it be amazing if we could create an all-senses type of experience in the church which brought the Nativity story to life."

A video projector in a mock-up of Mary's house recreates The Visitation, while AstroTurf and a "burning" fire by the pulpit helps youngsters imagine themselves in a field with the shepherds after the angels directed them to Bethlehem.

Ashley Nichols went on to say: "You get some of the most interesting questions, saying 'Did this really happen?' You get some great opportunities.

"Our prayer is that this might be the start of the journey of someone seeking out God and we hope that many people will be able to say in years to come that this was their first step."
