First female bishop sits in House of Lords on Monday

by Hannah Tooley

Bishop Rachel will enter Parliament as one of the Lords Spiritual.

Her role, along with the other 26 Lords Spiritual is to take up the Church of England's responsibility to contribute a Christian voice to our legislative process.

The Rt Revd Rachel Treweek became the Bishop of Gloucester in September in Gloucester Cathedral.

Upon entering the Upper Chamber for her Introduction, Bishop Rachel will be supported by the Archbishop of Canterbury and the Bishop of London.

During the ceremony, Bishop Rachel will take the parliamentary oath before taking a place on the benches alongside Archbishop Justin and the other members.

Bishop Rachel said: "I am looking forward to joining the Lords Spiritual and playing an active role in parliament.

"Through the parish system, which covers every part of England, the Church of England has a detailed understanding of what is important to people's lives, and where transformation is most needed.

"This is the voice I seek to bring to the House, together with the wisdom and transformation which only comes from the Good News of Jesus Christ."
