A 19th-century church in Amsterdam has been partially destroyed by fire, for the second time in its history.
The blaze at the Vondelkerk broke out in the early hours of New Year’s Day, causing severe damage to its roof and the collapse of its 50 metre tower.
Around 90 homes nearby were evacuated as a precaution at the height of the fire, but no injuries were reported.
Authorities said the remaining structure is expected to remain intact.
The Vondelkerk which was used for cultural events, was built in the 1870s and was deconsecrated. It had once been used for Catholic worship, but fell into disrepair in 1970s. Its spire was destroyed in a fire in 1904.
An investigation into the cause of the latest fire is underway.
