Finsbury Park Vicar says prayers against fear are needed

by Tola Mbakwe

Two of those who were injured in the Finsbury Park terror attack remain in a critical condition.

One person was killed and eleven hurt when a van was driven into a crowd early Monday.

Fr. Daniel Sanham who leads St. Johns the Evangelist Church said his church has been responding to the incident by leaving its doors open for anyone who wants to light a candle in honour of the victims and pray.

The congregation also took part in a vigil Monday evening and will partner with the mosque in further inter-faith vigils and services.

The mother of the Finsbury Park attack suspect says her son is "no terrorist - just a man with problems".

Police are questioning 47 year old Darren Osborne from Cardiff and are treating the investigation as a terrorist attack.

Fr Sandham knows the leaders of the mosque well and said they are committed to fighting against division.

He told Premier: "We will work even harder. We were sitting in a meeting and there were some Jewish Rabbis, there was the Bishop of Stepney and other Anglicans, a Roman Catholic bishop, there were leaders from the Muslim community, and there were some Reformed Jews as well.

"We all looked at one another and said 'This is not what the terrorists want. They want to see division, and hours after the attack and here we are doing exactly what terrorists don't want us to do.' So we will fight against it."

He told Premier it's vital for Christians to pray for people of faith in the Finsbury Park area. He said many in the community are scared.

He added: "In the scriptures we hear so often the words 'Do not be afraid'. I think people need to hear those words and we need to cast out fear."
