Elizabeth Jewkes, director of the Liberal Democrats Christian Forum has told Premier Christian Radio that she does not “recognise” the description of her party suggested by former Archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williams.
Over the weekend, Dr Rowan Williams told the Telegraph that he thinks "it is impossible" for a Christian to represent the party.
His comments were in response to the case of David Campanale, an Anglican candidate allegedly deselected by the Lib Dems due to his religious views on abortion. Campanale is 'pro-life', which party officials reportedly said was against their constitutional policy.
Jewkes told Premier that her faith is not in contradiction with the party she represents: “I’ve never found a problem with being a Christian and a Lib Dem – in fact I’ve found the opposite. It’s very easy to be a Christian and a Lib Dem, because the Lib Dems are so focussed on social justice.”
“As somebody who probably holds the same views as David, I didn’t have a problem running. We have so many Catholics, whose views [on abortion] are much stricter than mine, and they find a home in the Lib Dems.”
