The Archbishop of Wales has warned politicians alone cannot solve all the nation's problems as he praised the work of local “unsung heroes”.
In his Easter message, Most Rev Andrew John underscored that overcoming the difficulties Wales faces will require more than the efforts of any single individual, regardless of their dedication.
Recognising the limitations of political leadership, Archbishop John encouraged embracing Jesus' selfless love and serving others to transform communities. He highlighted the impactful work of churches in Wales, citing examples like Pam's visits to a local care home and Frank's opening of his church for prayer.
Amidst global challenges such as climate change and political instability, he emphasised the profound impact of personal connections and individual acts of kindness.
Specifically referencing Vaughan Gething, who recently became the first black person to lead a UK nation, Archbishop John told Premier Christian News of his anticipation in collaborating with the new First Minister.
He said: “Whenever Vaugh Gethin and his new government starts to, as it were, do the things that we relate to, he will find us as willing supporters and activists, you know, in a very positive way. But of course we're not politicians, we have a different role and my prayer for him is that he'll be true to the call to justice, that it sounded in the Old and in the New Testament, and to be striving for justice for all people. And I hope that he'll do that with energy.”
His Easter message concluded: “Few will be expecting the new First Minister to solve all our problems. Indeed, the very idea that change happens primarily because of political decisions seems to me misplaced. What lifts us above the mentality of living for ourselves alone is an experience of selfless love. And this is what Easter offers. In the Easter story we see a love so great, it breaks through to captivate and win us to service.
“May I wish you a Happy Easter and God’s blessing.”
