DRC: Bishops confident political agreement will be signed by end of week

The Catholic Church became a mediator between political parties after president Joseph Kabila failed to step down at the end of his constitutional mandate on 19 December after 16 years in power.

Several people throughout the country have been killed in violent clashes since the deadline.

It is expected that the deal will help pave the way for a peaceful transition of power.

The deal will see Kabila leave power after an election at the end of this year.

On Sunday, a direct negotiations session between the political majority and the opposition took place under the backing of the Catholic Church's National Episcopal Conference of Congo (CENCO).

During the meeting, all parties agreed that the signing of the special arrangement would take place on 28 January.

Père Clément Makiobo Malelo, executive secretary of the DRC Episcopal Justice and Peace Commission, told IBTimes UK stakeholders are still struggling to agree on issues related to the appointment of the Prime Minister and the formation of a government.
