Dame Lowell Goddard received £80,000 after quitting Church abuse inquiry
by Aaron James
The third chairwoman to resign from the national child abuse inquiry investigating the Church of England, among other institutions, was given an £80,000 pay-of
It's understood Dame Lowell Goddard received two months' salary, plus allowances and the cost of flights home to her native New Zealand.
This was on top of a £355,000 annual salary and £119,000 rental and utilities allowance.
Her resignation was a significant setback to the inquiry, which is looking at how the Church of England, Church in Wales and other public bodies dealt with child abuse.
It had already seen two chairwomen resign and, since Dame Lowell's resignation, two senior lawyers have also resigned.
Alexis Jay, who replaced Dame Lowell as chair, will earn £185,000 a year.
After her resignation, Dame Lowell said that "there is an inherent problem in the sheer scale and size" of the inquiry.
Prime Minister Theresa May insisted the inquiry is not "too broad" in scope.
A Home Office spokeswoman said: "The Independent Inquiry has a vital role to play in exposing the failure of public bodies and other major organisations to prevent child sexual abuse.
"We owe it to victims and survivors to get to the truth and the Independent Inquiry is continuing its vital work."
