A Coventry church is set to host a major event featuring a full-size replica of the Shroud of Turin, the famous linen believed by many to be the burial shroud of Jesus Christ.
This rare 15-foot replica will be displayed at St Patrick’s Church in Wood End next month, marking the first time it has been exhibited in the city.
The exhibition, which has previously been shown at Westminster Cathedral, Dublin Pro-Cathedral, and Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral, promises visitors a powerful and “moving” experience, according to Coventry Live.
The replica was created by American photographer Barrie Schwortz, who took the official photographs during the 1978 Shroud of Turin Research Project (STuRP) examination.
The original Shroud of Turin, which shows the image of a crucified man, is preserved in the Cathedral of Turin, Italy.
The Coventry exhibition will not only showcase the striking replica but also include other displays explaining the origins and significance of the Shroud’s image.
Father George Bennett, the parish priest at St Patrick’s, expressed excitement about hosting the event.
In an interview with the outlet he encouraged locals to visit and explore the Shroud's mysteries. “The exhibition helps us to understand the journey Christ made to and through the cross," he said. "We are thrilled to be hosting it and hope it will attract many visitors over the fortnight".
In addition to the replica Shroud, the exhibition will feature original Roman nails, a replica whip, and a spear, aiming to highlight the brutality of crucifixion and tell the story of Jesus’s final hours.
