Churches 'must purge immoral plastic'

Arocha UK has called upon church leaders to ban single-use plastics from their places of worship, amid fresh concerns about how the materials are damaging sea life.

Director of conservation, Andy Lester told Premier: "If you shop around, you can find yourself products which you can depose and will decompose.

"If you are one of these churches which says 'we don't have china mugs', you can get corn-starched disposable mugs which are heat-proof."

Andy Lester spoke out as the United Nations (UN) Environment Assembly took place in the Kenyan capital Nairobi, discussing how the international community can better work together to tackle the dangers caused by pollution.

Referring to the threat posed to sea life by plastic, the UN's oceans chief Dr Lisa Svensson told the BBC: "This is a planetary crisis.

"In a few short decades since we discovered the convenience of plastics, we are ruining the ecosystem of the ocean."
