Church where Guy Fawkes was baptised to close for two years

A congregation in York is having to leave it's church building to allow for major refurbishment works.
Located next to York Minster, the Grade I listed St Michael le Belfrey will have a new roof fitted and repairs to the stonework and medieval stained glass done.
The church will have two new doorways and level access added to the front/west end, along with an air source heat pump for underfloor heating.
The city council approved the project, pending an archaeological investigation before work starts.
The church, renowned as the baptismal site of Guy Fawkes, a prominent figure in the Gunpowder Plot, is a popular destination that attracts 35,000 visitors each year.
It’s the first major refurbishment of the 16th Century building in over 150 years mounting to a total of £3.5m.
The 600 congregation, which will meet in the De Grey Rooms from September.
The repair work is expected to be done by late 2025.
