In a bid to tackle its financial struggles, a rural church in County Durham is opening its doors to campers.
In an interview with the BBC, All Saints Church in Muggleswick near Consett revealed it will launch a unique "champing" experience to generate funds.
The church has secured £18,986 from the National Churches Trust Grant for vital upgrades.
This grant will support the installation of a new servery and accessible toilet, repair structural cracks, and fix the roof.
Churchwardens Helen Barrass and Lynne Bean told the outlet that “the funding has secured the future of our much-loved church."
Once renovations are complete, visitors will be able to stay overnight in the church, creating a new revenue stream.
This initiative is a response to financial difficulties exacerbated by the area's shrinking population.
“All Saints, Muggleswick will be the first church in County Durham to offer ‘champing’ accommodations while continuing its worship services” Barrass and Bean noted.
The church plans to collaborate with local organisations such as the North Pennines Area of Natural Beauty, Durham Northern Saints Trails, and the Sanctuary Network Project to attract visitors.
Plans include offering tourists a self-guided walk through the local nature reserve and exploring the nearby Grade I listed ruins of Muggleswick Grange.
