Church sells beer to save organ

by Desmond Busteed

Church of the Holy Saviour in Tynemouth has already sold 500 bottles of Organ Fund Ale, with the proceeds raised going towards the £30,000 needed to repair the 60-year-old instrument.

The beer is brewed in Tyne Bank Brewery, based in St Lawrence Road in Byker, Newcastle and has been given its own specific church branding.

Church organist Annette Butters has been spearheading the campaign to save the melody maker, speaking on Premier's News Hour, she said: "A cheaper option would have been a digital organ but our sort of pipe organ, with its original wiring coated in cotton, is special," said Annette, who lives in Tynemouth.

"It is a good organ and it is worth saving. It has given a lot of service and it has so many moving parts.

"People like it and I love that organ so much."

The church dates from 1841 and was designed for the Duke of Northumberland by John and Benjamin Green, who were also responsible for the Theatre Royal in Newcastle and Willington Quay railway viaduct in Wallsend.
