A 100-year-old church building in Doncaster has been engulfed in flames, in what fire crews believe is an arson attack.

Residents of nearby homes had to be evacuated just after 2am as the fire ripped through the building, Doncaster Free Press reports.

Rossington Methodist Church stopped being used as a church before the COVID-19 pandemic, but has been regularly used by residents of the former mining village for both scout groups and a dance school.

The church’s roof was completely destroyed in the blaze except for some structural beams.

Four fire crews attended at 2.10am and were at the scene until just after 6am. No casualties were reported.

In 2023, the church was one of 31 historic Doncaster assets to be added to the Local Heritage List, giving them protections in planning.

It was among a number of churches, schools and manor houses added to the list to help protect local buildings.
