Church offers shelter after suspected gas explosion on the Wirral

Life Church in Bebington become a response centre for households affected by the incident in Boundary Road which brought down several buildings, including a dance studio.

Writing on Twitter, senior pastor Aaron Partington told Premier: "We were just here to support people, love people, give people food [and] coffee, there were times when we are prayer with people as well. We just became the hands and feet of Christ, as the Church should be.

"As soon as it happened, really, our guys were amazing and I'm so proud of them. They really stepped up to the plate and, within ten minutes really, we had a coffee area open. The church actually ended up becoming a triage centre."

North West Ambulance Service said another 32 people were being treated for minor injuries, while debris could be seen scattered across the road.

Bino Shan, of a local convenience store, said: "I saw one man injured, I think a few people were injured.

"The building is gone, my door is damaged and broken. It's really scary, it was a big explosion but I didn't see any fire.

"The police said the gas blew up."

A fundraising campaign has already been started in aid of Complete Works, said to have been the dance studio which was destroyed.

Dan Stephens of Merseyside Fire and Rescue told reporters: "This incident is likely to be protracted, this is likely to last several days.

"Very significant damage as you can tell, so it will be some time before people will be allowed back into their houses."
