Church in a 'twist' over sexuality

Rt Rev Alan Wilson's comments coincided with the launch of his new book, More Perfect Union? Understanding Same-Sex Marriage.

Bishop Alan is one of the only Anglican bishops to publicly back gay marriage.

He told Premier's News Hour: "We've been going round and round in circles for 30 years in this.

"I've been part of at least three rounds of facilitated conversation in the 35 years I've been ordained.

"Strangely enough, pretty much everyone else in British society has managed to get through it in a better way: people in the military, people in politics, people in the media.

"I think the Church has got itself into a right old twist on this one and we need to get ourselves out."

But Rev Peter Ould, who describes himself as post-homosexual, told Premier he thinks the bishop has compromised his credibility over the issue.

He said: "What Alan Wilson's done is broken that combined public face and basically disturbed that whole very delicate diplomatic, dare I say, Holy Spirit-inspired work that the House of Bishops do to create a safe, private environment to discuss these kinds of things."

Earlier this month, the College of Bishops met to discuss guidance given to vicars about gay marriage.

It comes after the Church strongly opposed a change to the definition of marriage.

The Church has also put a ban on any clergy taking part in a same-sex union.
