A church in Scotland is celebrating Christmas with an unusual advent calendar.
New Kilpatrick Parish Church in Bearsden has lined up cans of Irn Bru to create an interactive window display.
Each day, the infamous orange cans are rearranged to create new words relating to the Christmas message, such as ‘hope’, ‘bless’ and ‘believe’.
Parish minister Rev Roddy Hamilton said crowds have formed at the window, as onlookers try to decipher the meaning behind the calendar.
“It is a bit of a laugh,” he said, “members of the congregation have drunk cans and cans of the stuff and are slowly turning in Oompa Loompas."
Rev Hamilton said that the puzzle element of working out each day’s messages represents waiting on God to reveal himself to us: “A new word is created every day… you need to look hard to see it.
“Sometimes the good news is hard to see, but then once you see it, you can't un-see it.
“The idea is to find creative crossroads between faith and culture that enable us to have some sort of common ground where we can offer a good news word for the day.”
Rev Hamilton said members of the public have responded positively to the display, saying: “I’ve got it”, “that’s quite cool,” and “that is a masterpiece”.
The church is using the attention created by its quirky display to drum up donations for Woman's Aid, which provides life-line services for the victims of domestic violence.
