A Warwickshire church has cancelled plans to host a “Holy Bass” night after strong criticism from parishioners who called it a “misuse of a sacred building”.

All Saints Parish Church in Leamington Spa had advertised the event as a “high-energy night of bass music” scheduled for 1st November.

The £10-a-ticket event was, however, quietly withdrawn after concerns were raised about noise, safety, and the use of sacred space for club-style entertainment.

Local residents reported that a previous event in September was so loud it could be heard across the town centre.

The church, built in 1842, describes itself on its website as “open and inclusive,” welcoming people from diverse backgrounds, including LGBT+ members.

However, the decision to host dance events within the historic building drew sharp criticism from parishioners and Christian leaders.

Speaking to the Telegraph, Rev Dr Ian Paul, associate minister at St Nic’s Nottingham said the event suggested that “this local church has lost its way,” adding that it “causes unnecessary offence and puts people off”.

A former parishioner also described the event as “a total misuse of a sacred space,” raising concerns about noise, fire safety, and potential structural damage.

All Saints’ website now simply states: “Please note: the event originally planned for Saturday 1 November will not be taking place.”

Similar attempts to repurpose church spaces have popped up across the country, including a helter-skelter in Norwich Cathedral and a mini-golf course in Rochester Cathedral.
