Christians in Sport welcomes report encouraging more physical activity

by Hannah Tooley

Christians in Sport was speaking as a new report published in The Lancet ahead of the Rio Olympic Games, studied more than a million people and shows physical inactivity costs the global economy more than £50 billion a year in health care costs and lost productivity.

Johnny Reid from Christians in Sport told Premier that being involved with sport is a gift from God.

He said: "It's a great chance just to use the different gifts and abilities God gives us, to enjoy the glorious creation around us as well, as we get active and get about, and also a great opportunity to worship God as we play as we run as we cycle as we walk, as we just get out and about.

"I think it's brilliant."

New research shows that physical inactivity is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes and some cancers and is associated with more than 5 million deaths per year.
The findings are published ahead of the Summer Olympic Games in Rio, Brazil.

Johnny Reid went on to say that group activities are a great way to get people more involved.

"Clubs are really welcoming now, maybe in the past there was a bit of stigma about that, they've got loads of programmes on to help people get stuck in really easily, in hockey we've got something called 'back to hockey' if people haven't played for years, or at all," he said.

"It's really friendly and really enjoyable and people are really, really welcoming."

He said that for many they need a push to take up something new or join a club: "For some people maybe they just need that encouragement, that boost to get out and enjoy it.

"And do it in a community, I think that can really, really help. I think we'd say being involved in the world of sport is a massive opportunity as well with those who don't know the Lord."
