Christians block nuclear base

Seven people stopped traffic going in or out of Burghfield Atomic Weapons Establishment.

The protesters said the blockade was inspired by the events of Holy Week when Jesus confronted the political powers.

The action was timed to coincide with the start of the general election campaign and the protestors urged politicians not to replace the UK's nuclear deterrent.

A vote to replace Trident submarines is likely to take place during the next parliament.

According to the Ekklesia website Jo Frew, a protestor at the site, said: "Nuclear weapons are a threat to everything I believe in: peace, justice, and the wellbeing of creation.

"We see in Jesus' actions a clear imperative that faith compels us to act. That is why we are here today to call for an end to the atomic weapons industry and for Trident not to be replaced."

Police had to cut the chains the protestors used to stop them being removed.

No one was arrested and the group prayed outside before leaving peacefully.
