A Christian teacher has lost her case for unfair dismissal and religious discrimination.
She was dismissed after accessing confidential files on a transgender pupil and refusing to use the child’s chosen name and pronouns, as reported by BBC News.
Known only as “A”, the teacher was suspended in 2021 after raising objections to affirming the pupil’s gender identity, stating it conflicted with her Christian beliefs.
She wrote to the headteacher: “Sex is a God-given reality. Being male or female is an immutable biological fact.”
The Nottinghamshire school later found she had accessed the pupil’s safeguarding records multiple times without authorisation.
During the tribunal, A admitted her actions were wrong and had bypassed safeguarding protocols.
All legal claims, including unfair dismissal and religious discrimination, were dismissed by the Nottingham Employment Tribunal.
Judge Peter McTigue said: her actions were “clearly unreasonable”, noting she lacked access to all relevant medical information.
In the ruling, the judge also affirmed the lifelong right to privacy for transitioning children regarding their biological sex.
The teacher has since stated: “I am very disappointed with the judgment. It misrepresents the facts.”
