Christian peace activists cleared of obstructing arms fair

by Tola Mbakwe

As truckloads of equipment arrived at the fair organised by the Defence and Security Equipment International in East London in September 2017, Quakers were among faith groups protesting against arms trade and profiting from war.

Jo Frew, Nora Zeigler, Henrietta Cullinan and Chris Cole lay in the road and locked themselves to wooden frames in order to stop the equipment from entering the building.

According to Quakers in Britain, the hearing at Stratford Magistrates Court this week was told that their rights must be upheld under the European Convention of Human Rights.

They were consequently found not guilty of obstruction of the highway.

During the protest the church group held worship, prayer and candle-lit vigils in solidarity with victims of the arms trade.
