Christian nutritionist: good diet "imperative"

by Hannah Tooley

Nicola Burgher-Kennedy, a Christian and Public Health Nutritionist, was speaking after a health charity warned that urging people to follow low fat diets and to lower their cholesterol is having "disastrous health consequences."

The National Obesity Forum and the Public Health Collaboration have called for a "major overhaul" of current dietary guidelines.

They say the focus on low fat diets is failing to address Britain's obesity crisis, while snacking between meals is making people fat.

The report has caused a huge backlash amongst the scientific community and the Government says the new advice is 'irresponsible' and is not backed up by scientific evidence.

Nicola Burgher-Kennedy stressed that the guidelines had not changed.

She said being healthy is key: "If we have a healthy body then we can perform and function as we were created to, for the glory of God.

"So it's imperative that as Christians, nutrition and healthy eating principles are not only known but also implemented."

Ms Burgher-Kennedy said: "Preparation is key when it comes to healthy eating and diet, because if we don't we can then opt for those foods that more indulgent, that are not necessarily nutrient rich - they're probably calorie rich, but not necessarily nutrient rich."
