David Cameron's officially started the election period after meeting the Queen to tell her Parliament has been dissolved.
Speaking outside Number 10, he said voters face a "stark choice" between him and Ed Miliband.
David Burrowes, the Conservative parliamentary candidate for Enfield, Southgate urged voters to choose his party, suggesting the Tories are best at handling the economy, speaking Premier's Marcus Jones , he said: "We've got Ed Miliband who could be the Prime Minister or David Cameron and that is a really clear choice, because what we've been saying from the start is that it is effectively a referendum on who wants to runs the economy, which is at last finding real fruits of the really hard work and labour.
"With more jobs being created than ever before, and starting to really see a turnaround, which does mean that with a strong economy we can ensure that we have a strong national health service and public services."
Helen Goodman, Labour's candidate for Bishop Auckland in Durham was Shadow Minister for Welfare Reform in the last parliament. Speaking on Premier's News Hour she said Labour wants to improve living standards: "The NHS is obviously a priority for the public, which is why we have emphasised it, but higher living standards for working families; I think that's a really big thing with Labour.
"We want to raise the minimum wage to £8, we want to freeze energy bills until 2017."
Steve Webb, Liberal Democrat candidate for Thornbury and Yate near Bristol, told Premier's News Hour he expected the party to do better that the polls suggested: "When we decided whether or not go in coalition in 2010 we knew for us as a party that could be difficult... but we decided that it was in the national interest and that's what we'll do this time around.
"In 2010 people said 'we haven't got a majority, we need stable government for five years' and that's what we've helped deliver."
The General Election takes place on May 7.
