A Christian MP has asked the Church Commissioners whether the Church of England would consider financially supporting those living abroad who are unable to find a job due to their beliefs. 

Speaking during Church Commissioners questions, MP Jim Shannon said: "To ask the Member for South West Bedfordshire, representing the Church Commissioners, if the Church of England will consider the potential merits of providing ring-fenced funding to support Christians to self-sustain overseas if they are denied employment due to their belief." 

The Second Church State Commissioners, Andrew Selous said the national Church "has no plans to provide such support". 

He said: "No one should be denied employment on grounds of their Christian beliefs save in the most limited and legitimate circumstances, such as under a genuine occupational requirement. The Church of England comprises many different charitable bodies, each of which has its own charitable purposes. 

"Each body would need to consider whether the provision of such support furthered its objects and came within its powers. There is a difference between support for Christians generally and the promotion of the work and mission of the Church of England, which is the purpose of the national Church. For this reason, the national Church has no plans to provide such support."
