Christian leader urges unity in face of Russell Square attack

by Hannah Tooley

A 19-year-old Norwegian man of Somali origin is being questioned on suspicion of murder following the incident in Russell Square in which an American woman in her 60s died and five other people were hurt.

Two others are still receiving treatment, while three people have been discharged from hospital after being injured.

The motive of the attack is not yet know and Scotland Yard thinks mental health was a 'significant factor' in the attack, while there is no evidence so far to suggest it was motivated by terrorism.

Jonathan Oloyede from the National Day of Prayer and Worship told Premier there is a role for faith in times of fear.

He said: "It's the role of the Church to stand in the gap in prayer, and in practical action, to make sure darkness doesn't cover the land in fear.

"The Church can help with calmness and community cohesion."

He said people will look to Christians for comfort: "Even when we go through places of darkness and difficulty, we can draw on that safety and peace that comes from God.

"We have to transmit that wherever we are.

"People are going to be looking to Christians as well, we can say we have somebody with us, who never leaves us."

Speaking on Premier Christian Radio's News Hour programme, Revd Dr Simon Woodman from the nearby Bloomsbury Central Baptist Church commented on evidence it may have been triggered by mental illness.

He said: "Our church stands here in the middle of this wonderful city but it's a city that has its fair share of problems.

"The challenges of mental health is a recurring theme that we meet in our church's engagement with the homeless and the vulnerable that we encounter.

"One of the key areas that Christians can become involved with is getting to value each person as a human being created in the image of God because it's when people become disconnected from society that they find themselves unable to access the help that many of the rest of us would have when we face our own times of poor mental health."

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has called for the public to remain "calm and vigilant" as police investigate whether a knife attack that left one woman dead and five people injured was terror-related.

Mr Khan said his "heart goes out to the victims of the incident in Russell Square and their loved ones" after the death of the woman, who has not been identified but is believed to have been in her 60s.

Armed police are being deployed on the streets of London on Thursday to reassure the public who were recently warned that it was a case of "when, not if" a terrorist attack took place in Britain.
