Christian group and the Pope are praying for tsunami-hit Tonga

by Alex Collett

The Tongan Fellowship and Pope Francis are praying for Tonga, after it was hit by an underwater volcano on Saturday.

The Tongan Fellowship, is a network of 30 families across the UK who are keeping in contact with those who have been affected on the island.

Singa Vunipola, is a Methodist Presbyter and part of the group, she spoke to Premier about how they have been praying: “We had a zoom prayer meeting, last Saturday, we also have a prayer chain that we pray from our home together, we are also hoping to have a National Prayer Day on Saturday January 29th.

“From what we have heard, through other families the residents on the island are fine but the emotional trauma has left them broken and terrified.

“They have been advised not to drink the water and to stay in.”

“Bless the Lord that New Zealand has been really prompt in sending their water to Tonga.

“That’s what they need.

“They said they couldn’t believe how big the bang was from the volcano eruption and it was about 20 to 30 miles from the island.”

The first flights carrying fresh water to Tonga have finally arrived five days after the underwater volcanic eruption.

International aid efforts were hampered by a blanket of ash that's been covering the Pacific nation's main airport.

New Zealand and Australia sent military transport planes carrying kits for temporary shelters, generators and communication equipment

Pope Francis has also expressed that he is also praying for everyone affected, he said: “My thoughts go out to the peoples of the Tonga Islands who in recent days were affected by the eruption of an underwater volcano, which caused considerable material damage.

“I am spiritually close to all those who are sorely-tried, and I implore from God relief in their suffering. I invite everyone to join me in prayer for these our brothers and sisters.”
