The charity won the Innovative Quality Outcomes Award at the 3rd Sector Care Awards Ceremony held at the London Marriot Hotel Grosvenor Square.
The award was given to Safe Families for their new way of addressing care; bringing volunteers into people's homes to help support struggling families, to prevent their children being taken into care.
The 3rd Sector Care Award judges commented: "It is a social movement that is innovative, and changes not only practices but also lives."
Since 2013, Safe Families has improved the lives of more than 4800 children living in the UK.
More than 2000 vulnerable families who are struggling to cope have been supported by the charity's volunteers.
Keith Danby, Chief Executive at Safe Families for Children told Premier: "It was really just fantastic news, we had been nominated for a number of awards this year but to get to the final and to win it as just incredible."
He described the process leading up to the victory, saying: "I had to go before a very experienced panel and be interviewed for 30 minute and they asked lots of questions - pretty daunting!
"Well, we were in the final...and they announced that we'd won it."
Regarding how the charity helps families, Keith Danby explained: "Often we will have known very little about them, other than that we've had this referral.
"We go out and meet the family, we link the family with a volunteer and they support the family through whatever challenging times they have."
