Christian charity welcomes lowering unemployment

by Hannah Tooley

Christians Against Poverty was speaking as unemployment figures fell to their lowest level since 2008.

The Office for National Statistics said the number of those out of work was down by a 102,000 between November and January, to 1.86 million.

Additionally 31,000 fewer people claimed Job Seekers' Allowance during February.

James Carne, from Christians Against Poverty, said the figures are positive, but it is still a problem worrying thousands of people.

He said: "1.86 million still out of work is something that is quite a troubling statistic - particularly when you consider the impact of unemployment in people's lives... the increase in depression, challenges in family units and the idea around people's self-worth.

"So it's great it's decreasing but definitely there's a lot of work to be done for those who haven't yet found work."
