The international Catholic charity is appealing for more parishioners to volunteer with them over the festive season.
Speaking to Premier, Kieran Knights, the Society's Membership Development Officer for the South said that Christmas is often a time of profound loneliness for many people and having someone to talk to can make a world of difference.
Knights said: "At this time of year, lots of charities are asking for money but we're focusing on time because really want people. We want people to give a little bit of their time to help others.
"Loneliness can be very bleak at this time of year when if you don't have any friends or family. So we try and make friends with people, maybe just get together to have a cup of tea and a joke or take them a Christmas card, take them a Christmas gift and try and relieve that feeling of loneliness."
Some volunteer opportunities with SVP include helping out at a local soup kitchens and delivering Christmas parcels to the elderly.
By offering up time instead of money, SVP believe volunteers may discover the gift of time might be the best gift they've ever given.
Knights added: "I don't think that anybody does that sort of thing for a reward but there is a lot of joy in transforming somebody's life."
The appeal will run across diocese in England and Wales until Christmas.
