Christian artist's work featured on roof of London underground station

by Cara Bentley

The words 'Nothing can separate us' from Romans 8 are now plastered onto the roof of a tube station in central London.

Lakwena Maciver, a Christian, designed the colourful installation above Temple tube station on the north side of the river Thames, which now covers the grey concrete that was there before.

It's known as the Artist's Garden and has been four years in the planning.

Maciver said: "The name Temple, given to the group of buildings in London which stands on land formerly belonging to the Knights Templar, is overshadowed by its now predominantly secular surroundings. But the concept of a temple - a place where heaven and earth meet - remains deeply relevant. They say that the Garden of Eden was the first temple - the story goes that we were cast out of the Garden, and ever since then we have been longing to find our way back. This idea of a subconscious yearning for paradise sits in stark contrast to the highly colonised, concrete environment that now surrounds Temple Station. Yet it is this which has become the impetus for this public intervention."

Currently based in London, her work has been shown in Paris, New York, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Miami and often features murals consisting of blocked bright colours with text. Her work has alos been featured hanging over the Covent Garden area of London and has had other Biblical phrases such as "lift you higher".

The rooftop also has a ‘safe space’ hut modelled after London’s black cab shelters, little green buildings that have served as cafes for cab drivers since 1875.

Maciver was to an English mother and Ugandan father and spent her childhood in East Africa. She studied graphic design at the London College of Communication, graduating in 2009.
