Cheese grows on trees according to many children, Christian nutritionist responds

by Tola Mbakwe

The British Nutrition Foundation surveyed more than 5,000 kids in the UK and found many of them are confused about where their food has come from.

Just over 20 per cent of five to seven year olds thought pasta comes from animals.

There were also suggestions that tomatoes grow underground and prawns originate from plants.

Christian nutritionist Diana Wright told Premier News Hour the survey results signify something.

"We've come away from what's natural because children are thinking fruit pastilles are one of five a day. We've obviously come away from the reality of what life is about," she said.

Wright also said the data also reveals that children may not enough time with their parents as needed discussing daily life topics.

"It's all of our responsibility it's mine, teachers, parents and I think we need to get more education in all those areas in ways that are relevant, in ways that are going to speak to the children."

The survey also questioned younger children.

It found 10 per cent of 11-14 year olds did not know that carrots and potatoes grow underground.

Some thought they came from vines, bushes or trees.
