Champion boxer Katie Taylor, popularly known as the “Bray Bomber,” has opened up about the profound impact her mother’s conversion to Christianity had on her family and her own life.

Speaking to podcaster Eddie Hobbs on his show Counterpoint, Taylor reflected on a childhood she described as “very, very chaotic,” growing up on a council estate in Bray, Ireland. Her mother had struggled with heavy drinking and smoking, while her father faced repeated legal troubles.

Taylor said the turning point came after a tragic house fire claimed the lives of a family living a few doors away. “It was very, very tragic,” she recalled. “That deeply affected my ma and led her to ask bigger questions about life.”

It was then that her mother encountered a Christian couple at a local coffee shop. Taylor described how “coincidences seemed too coincidental,” as the couple, known for their “unconditional kindness,” invited her mother to attend Bible studies and church.

“That’s when the God who rescued my mam basically became my God,” Taylor said. She explained that her mother stopped drinking and smoking, bringing “peace… and hope” into their home for the first time.

Taylor has spoken openly in the past about her own faith, crediting her trust in Jesus with her success in the ring.

Reflecting on the rise of Gen Z Christians, she told Hobbs, “People are definitely more open than you realise. I think it’s very, very hard to navigate life without Jesus.”
