The grounds of the cathedral are said to be used as an escape route for shoplifters due to the numerous exits and entrances.
Police say they'll be able to use the cameras to identify culprits but church leaders hope they'll work as a deterrent too.
Speaking to Premier, Theo Platt from the cathedral said: "We want all our visitors - hundreds of thousands every year - to feel as welcome and safe as possible. The CCTV is just one measure we've put in place.
"The vast, vast majority of people enjoy visiting the Cathedral but unfortunately every so often things do happen and as custodians of the building it is our duty to make sure we're doing everything we can to make sure people are safe and the grounds are looked after."
The cameras have been paid for through a Home Office initiative.
