More than two decades after The Passion of the Christ became a global phenomenon, director Mel Gibson is moving forward with its long-awaited sequel—but without two of its most iconic stars.
Film industry magazine Deadline has reported that Jim Caviezel, who portrayed Jesus, and Monica Bellucci, who played Mary Magdalene, will not return for the sequel, The Resurrection of the Christ.
Sources close to the production confirm that Gibson and his team have opted to recast the film entirely.
The Passion of the Christ was a huge box office success when it was released in 2004, securing $612 million (£452 million) worldwide, and remains one of the highest-grossing independent films ever made.
Its sequel has been in development for nearly 20 years. Filming began this summer at Rome’s famed Cinecittà Studios, where the original was also shot.
The film will explore the three days between Jesus’s crucifixion and resurrection, a period Gibson has described as “the most transformative story ever told.”
It will be released in two parts: the first is scheduled for March 26, 2027 (Good Friday), and the second for May 6, 2027 (Ascension Day).
Caviezel had previously expressed interest in reprising his role and claimed in past interviews that Gibson’s script would be “a masterpiece.” However, recent reports suggest that creative and scheduling differences led to his departure. Bellucci’s exit is also believed to be amicable.
Caviezel is known to have a deep and personal faith. He has spoken many times about how his Catholic faith is more than just belief. He said that praying the Rosary, going to confession, and receiving the Eucharist regularly have been central to his spiritual journey.
It’s not yet known which actors are slated to play the roles of Jesus and his mother, Mary.
