Carlisle Cathedral’s East Window has been named the nation’s favourite stained glass window.
The Association of English Cathedrals invited thousands of people to vote for their favourite stained glass panes, from Advent until the New Year. An estimated 2.1 million people took part
Of England’s 42 cathedrals, the top-rated panes included York Minister’s Great East Window, which ranked second, followed by St Albans’ Rose Window, Wells Cathedral’s Jesse Window and Gloucester’s Great East Window.

The Venerable Michael Everitt, Interim Dean of Carlisle, expressed his delight at their top spot.
“It has played a central part in our lives: whether through concerts, services or visits,” he said of the Great East Window. “The combination of the ancient glass at the top and the wonderful Victorian depictions of Jesus’ life, all set beneath our starry ceiling means you truly get a glimpse of heaven inside the Cathedral.”
To celebrate the win, Carlisle Cathedral is launching a new guided tour, Sacred Light: The Stained Glass of Carlisle Cathedral, beginning on Saturday 21st February.
Everitt added: "We are really looking forward to welcoming new people through our doors."
