Labour member and former priest Chris Bryant was sent a message on Twitter which he later reported to officers.
The threatening tweet was received after the Rhondda MP commented on the terror attacks in Paris.
The account from which it came from has now been closed.
A South Wales Police spokesman said: "We have received a report and investigations are under way."
