Bomb scare as visitor brings WWI explosive to church coffee morning

by Lydia Davies

A community coffee morning at St Paul's Church in Withington, Manchester, took an unexpected turn on Wednesday when a visitor brought in what appeared to be explosive devices from World War One, accoridng to the BBC.

The event’s organisers quickly alerted the local fire station after recognising the potential danger.

Emergency services, including police bomb disposal experts, responded by setting up an 82-foot safety cordon around the church.

Reverend Cate Allison told the outlet that the situation was “handled safely” as the munitions were taken away and destroyed in a controlled explosion.

"We’re grateful for the community’s support and the swift action of the emergency services," she said.

Greater Manchester Police reported the suspicious devices at around 11:10 am, and they were confirmed as WWI-era shells.
