Bishops call on church to help combat knife crime

by Eno Adeogun

It comes as the Metropolitan Police report an increase in knife killings with the death toll from stabbings this year reaching 17 people under 25 in London alone.

Rt Rev Christopher Chessun, Anglican Bishop of Southwark and Senior Pastor of Church of God of Prophecy Bishop Lenford Rowe, will be among tonight's speakers calling for both the Church and wider community to help fight youth violence.

They will be speaking at Hope 2017, an event hosted by Street Pastors founder Rev Les Isaac and PR agency Marcia Dixon at Clapham Methodist Church from 7pm - 9pm.

Rev Isaac set up his street pastor team in 2003 as a response to gun and knife crime in Britain's urban areas.

He told Premier's News Hour the reasons why the situation isn't improving.

"With all the cut-backs, police sort of lost focus on the issue. The realities are we still have the problems with us - on the homes in the communities, among young people.

"We think it has just created a rise in terms of the tension and in terms of the problems," he said.

Rev Isaac also said: "As a church community we can no longer look the other way. We must use the resources we have to hand to make a difference in the lives of our youth."

Other speakers at the event include Professor Anthony Goodman, who has carried out research on youth and crime and Delphine Duff, a consultant who's worked with the Probation Service.

Attendees will also learn how they can volunteer to work with organisations already engaged in youth work.
