The Catholic Bishops of England and Wales will pause their autumn plenary meeting for an hour of prayer on the issue of assisted dying.
The bishops say their focus is “the intrinsic dignity of every person” as they anticipate the assisted dying bill leading to a duty to die.
President of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales, Cardinal Vincent Nichols wrote: “[Legalising assisted dying] would greatly diminish the importance and innate value of every human person, akin to saying that our life is not a gift of God.”
The Holy Hour for the Dignity of Human Life will take place at the Chapel of the Holy Family at Hinsey Hall, Leeds.
The Catholic Church is calling on others to join the prayers:
“We would encourage Catholics, in their churches or in their homes, to join in prayerful solidarity with the Bishops to create a powerful moment of prayer throughout our lands.”
