Bishop offers spare room to homeless

Rt Rev Mark Bryant has signed up to Depaul UK's Nightstop scheme, which means young people living on the streets can stay at his home for the night.

The bishop is calling on more people to sign up and thinks the act of generosity can also benefit those offering the service.

He told Premier: "My own experience, the experience of people right across the country, is that these young people are delightful.

"They are embarrassingly grateful and, to be frank, most of them are just a joy to have in the house.

"Those of us who've done this or similar things find that the real thing is that our lives have been deeply enriched by meeting these young people; by meeting the sort of people who perhaps otherwise we might not normally meet."

Last year the scheme provided almost 12,000 bed nights and volunteer hosts gave more than 176,000 hours of their time.

A placement can be overnight or up to two weeks, and the scheme already has many examples of how this can mark the first step out of homelessness for a young person.
