Bishop of Truro becomes president of autism charity

by Aaron James

Rt Revd Tim Thornton is taking the position at Spectrum, which is based in Penryn.

Spectrum provides accommodation and education for children and adults who have varying levels of autism, and support for others involved in their care and development.

Bishop Tim's succeeding the former Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall, Lady Mary Holborow, who has stepped down after fifteen years of service.

He told The Packet newspaper: "The first thing that struck me about Spectrum was that its service users were the central focus of everything and there was a real drive and passion to help these people live the most fulfilling and enjoyable lives they possibly could.

"There is so much going on behind the scenes but at the forefront of people's minds is creating a home and an atmosphere where someone can be treated as an individual, not as a person with autism, and that is wonderful to see and to be a part of."

The Bishop of Truro is also the chairman of The Children's Society, and was part of a parliamentary group looking at hunger in the UK.
