Bishop gives 10 commandments for robots

by Eno Adeogun

Rev Steven Croft, who sits of the House of Lords select committee on AI, urged the Government and the technology industry to take the ethical implications of AI advancements seriously.

Speaking at the event 'Artificial Intelligence and Robotics: Innovation, Funding and Policy Priorities', he detailed his modern commandments for robots, which focus on data protection, ethics, criminal subversion and restrictions AI's power "to destroy."

Rev Croft said he became concerned about the power of AI after reading an article in The Times about a robotic vacuum cleaner.

Writing in his blog he explained: "The robot will use AI to navigate the best route round your living room.

"To do this, it will make a map of your room using its on-board cameras.

"The cameras will then transmit the data back to the company who make the robot.

"They can sell the data on to well known on line retailers who can then email you with specific suggestions of cushion covers or lamps to match your furniture.

"All of this will be done with no human input whatsoever."

His commandments include: "The primary purpose of AI should be to enhance and augment, rather than replace, human labour and creativity." While another states: "Governments should ensure that the best research and application of AI is directed towards the most urgent problems facing humanity."

Rev Croft called on Christians to also "think seriously about these questions and engage in the debate".
