The Bishop of Guildford has descended his Cathedral’s tower, in a daring community fundraiser.
Right Revd Andrew Watson abseiled nearly 50 metres (160 feet). He was joined by staff, bell ringers and members of the local community.
“I can’t pretend that the abseiling was anything other than terrifying,” Bishop Watson admitted. “But it was wonderful to be cheered on by such a great bunch of people, including my fellow abseilers.”
The bishop led the charge, making the first ‘leap of faith’ down the tower. He said he was “really glad” to have taken part.
In total, 27 abseilers have raised more than £10,000 for Guildford Cathedral and the Bishop of Guildford’s Communities Fund, supporting local projects.
Nicola Pratt, head of development at Guildford Cathedral, said : “It was a day full of joy, community spirit and no small amount of bravery. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who took part and supported this event.”
Guildford Cathedral, situated on Stag Hill, requires around £3,500 each day to sustain its building and to deliver outreach, education and cultural programmes.
On the same weekend, the Cathedral hosted a wedding - which it says was a "reminder of the many roles this special place plays in people’s lives".
