A Catholic priest in Bedford has described the vandalism of centuries-old graves as “a shocking and deeply distressing act", urging the community to respond with faith and forgiveness.
Father Tomasz Maziarz, from the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus & St Cuthbert, told the BBC: “It is very shocking… a profanation, as it is a holy area.”
The church’s graveyard, dating back over 200 years, has now been targeted twice in just over a month. Parishioners discovered the latest damage after an attack on Monday night and believe heavy tools may have been used.
“Ultimately, these are sacred places where someone’s remains have been laid to rest and they should stay that way,” said parish committee member Gina Marszalek. “We’ve never experienced such a horrible, horrible act.”
Despite the shock, Fr Maziarz offered a message of compassion: “We pray for the people who have done this. It is very important to have faith.”
Wojciech Lapinski, the parish’s health and safety coordinator, said the community is now hoping to raise funds for CCTV and other security measures.
Bedfordshire Police say they are actively investigating and have increased patrols in the area. Inspector Vicky Stoughton urged anyone with information to come forward.
