Be 'blessed' by volunteering, Christian charity recommends

by Eno Adeogun

The recommendation came as International Volunteer Day is observed worldwide on Tuesday to celebrate volunteerism.

Jacob Quagliozzi, director of the Christian housing charity Housing Justice, told Premier why more Christians should volunteer.

He explained: "We quite often hear volunteers talk about them feeling blessed... from their work and a spirit of teamwork and... solidarity that comes from working in... a shelter environment.

"There must be something to it because we've got so many people who come back year after year and give two or three hours a week to sit with people who they probably don't know and it can be a bit uncomfortable at first but there's something that keeps people coming back."

The United Nations designated day's theme this year is #VolunteersActFirst. Here. Everywhere.

It recognises the positive solidarity of volunteers around the world who answer calls for help in times of crisis, helping save lives and supporting those who want to continue living their lives with dignity tomorrow.

Mr Quagliozzi, told Premier it's important to create the right type of environment for young people to be encouraged to give up their free time for others.

He said: "It's about finding the right and appropriate things for young people to volunteer in and causes which appeal to young people.

"And making sure that we put all of the infrastructure in place to make sure it's a safe place and a secure place for them to volunteer in and they can really get something out of it."
