Archbishop of York celebrates 1000 year jubilee of Christian laws in Norway

by Lydia Davies

This weekend, the Archbishop of York Most Rev Stephen Cottrell commemorated a significant milestone: the 1000-year anniversary of Christian laws in Norway.

The millennium celebration at Moster Old Church included various events including a formal dinner and a late night service, which was organised by the Christian Council of Norway and the Church of Norway

According to website The Archbishop of York, as Archbishop Cottrell addressed attendees, many of which were political and community leaders including HRH Crown Prince Haakon and Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, he noted: "Every democracy will only be as good as the civic forces that sustain it."

During the celebrations, Rev Canon Joanna Udal highlighted the enduring bond between Britain and Norway, saying: “The Moster 2024 celebrations give us a great chance to celebrate the strong ties... This relationship plays an important part in our ministry as an English-speaking Anglican Chaplaincy in Norway.”

Reflecting on his participation, Archbishop Stephen shared, “It has been joyful to be joining the 1000-year jubilee services at Moster as we cherish the bonds of our friendship and Christian fellowship where we are walking, working and praying together.”
