Archbishop Justin Welby opens up on same-sex marriage and suffering with Jeremy Vine

by Aaron James

In a sell-out crowd of 1600 people at the University of Worcester's Arena, Radio 2 presenter Jermey Vine quizzed Most Rev Justin Welby on a variety of topics.

The live interview in front of an audience is part of the Archbishop's three-day visit to the Diocese of Worcester, where's he's also been addressing business leaders and is set to address the Pakistani Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai.

When asked about how the Church of England will deal with continuing questions regarding same-sex marriage, Mr Welby said: "We are struggling forward inch by inch to find a way to express the unwavering love of God to all people, whatever their opinions.

"The Church is not a club, we're a family and we have to keep working out how we relate to each other."

And when asked about the problem of suffering, he replied: "There is no nice neat answer.

"I can only say that whenever I start running away from God, I find myself embraced in arms of love which are more powerful than I am."

Members of the audience also asked Mr Welby why he wanted to be Archbishop of Canterbury, his opinions on the refugee crisis, whether going to church was necessary to be a Christian and whether believers need to pray for God to act in a situation.

The Diocese of Worcester is releasing a video of Jeremy Vine's conversation with Justin Welby.
